Definition
Affiliate marketing (also known as associate marketing) is a revenue sharing process between online advertisers/merchants and online publishers/marketers, where a compensation is based on performance measures, typically in the form of sales, clicks or registrations. Simply put it is selling products on a commission basis.

How it works
When two websites share revenue to sell a product or service, it is known as affiliate marketing. Affiliates/marketers are paid a commission or a flat rate based on sales, registrations, clicks or leads agreed upon between the merchant and the affiliate.

When a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or link that is placed on the affiliates website a cookie containing a unique code identifiying the affiliate is saved to that computer. If the customer makes a purchase the affiliate gets credit for the sale and is paid according to their agreement.
